Kerry Clarke

Kerry Clarke

Kerry currently holds a 3rd degree Black belt in freesyle Kickboxing and Karate.

Kerry began training in Martial Arts at the age of 13 and was hooked from the outset. She soon started taking part in national tournaments and receiving podium positions.

At 15 years old Kerry was picked to represent Great Britain, this resulted in her winning a Bronze Medal. It was after this tournament Kerry decided to up her game and train in Martial Arts patterns and weapons.

Kerry has fought in competitions all over the world, with her gaining 4 World titles and 4 European titles. She has been teaching adults and children in Martial Arts since the age of 16 and is proud to say many of the children themselves have gone on to become black belts and World Champions. Kerry continues to train in Freestyle Kickboxing and sharing all her knowledge with her students.

As well as competing in Martial Arts Kerry has had a lead role in a short Martial Arts film, given talks and demonstrations to students of Loughborough University (the leading sports university in the UK) and organised both fund raising events and demonstrated at Cancer research UK’s events.

Dean Hopewell

Dean Hopewell

Dean began training in Martial Arts to gain confidence and improve fitness. After a few sessions he was hooked and dedicated over 10 years to traditional Kung fu, open hand patterns and weapons.

Dean has also taken his training to a competitive level and took part in Pattern and continuous sparring categories, this has not only been at local and national level but at European level too. Dean has also finished in the top 3 at these competitions.

During his time training dean started assisting teaching classes and eventually fully teaching the junior and beginner classes. Dean has also built on his knowledge of Martial Arts by taking part in seminars in Muay thai, Karate, Krav Maga and Shaolin kung fu until finally settling at Spartans and concentrating on Kickboxing.

Dean is a valued member of Spartans and helps out teaching both children and adults at the academy. He has also introduced his son Jack to Spartans and it seems as though he will be following in his father’s footsteps....

Kyle Humphreys

Kyle Humphreys

Kyle began his journey into Martial Arts here at Spartans academy the day the doors opened back in May 2010, after a few lessons he knew that this was a sport for him.

Kyle soon upped his training to three times a week and go himself a sparring kit. After only 6 months of training Kyle entered his first tournament, and the following year his first World championships! Kyle has recently started helping out with teaching the beginner kids class, he is a fantastic example to both children and adults of what can be achieved with hard work, dedication and the right attitude. He still has a little way to go in his journey however I know he will give it his all and make a fantastic blackbelt.

Jonnie Gilbert

Jonnie Gilbert

Jonnie began his journey in the arts when he was a youngster, training in the style of Tae Kwon do from 5 and practiced this style for around 4 years.

Jonnie never reached his black belt when he left his Tae Kwon Do club however the enthusiasm for martial arts never really went away.

Jonnie has been with Spartans now for just over a year, and in his first year he has managed to not only achieve great scores within his gradings. He won a British title and European title all in the same year! Jonnie also went on to win the Spartans trophy tournament and the student of the year tournament. Jonnie has a great future at Spartans and he will hopefully be around for many years to come and teach lots of students who come through the academy.

Dion Braidley

Dion Braidley

I started kickboxing in January 2011 when I was 9 years old. Since starting kickboxing I have improved my confidence, strength and fitness.

When I reached my yellow belt I attended my first sparring session and I enjoyed it so much that I wanted to start competing in tournaments. At my first competition I came second in my points category and runner up in my patterns category. I carried on attending tournaments and I achieved two third places.

In 2014, I achieved student of the year award at an awards night. Since earning my brown black belt, I have been helping out teaching in the Wednesday children’s class. In the classes, I have been holding pads, standing up at the front and call out combinations and techniques, taking the warm up and looking to see how everybody is getting on.

Outside of kickboxing, I also play football and cricket for the school. My other biggest hobbies (apart from kickboxing) are skateboarding, scootering, going out with my mates and spending time with my little brother.
